The Random Chat Report 2026: Who Talks to Strangers, Where, and When

October 23, 2026 · The Ome.gg Team · 10 min read

Two in three random chats are over within 10 seconds, and more than four in five are between people in different countries. That's what Ome.gg's numbers show for October 2026, and they rest on a lot of chats: between May and 22 October 2026, strangers started 11.9 million random text chats on the site.

This report sets out what Ome.gg's own aggregate counts show about who talks to strangers online, where they are, when they log on, how the chats go and what happens afterwards.

Key findings

  • Strangers started 11,855,663 random chats on Ome.gg between May and 22 October 2026, including about 10.1 million in the first 22 days of October alone: roughly 460,000 a day.
  • 66.4% of chats are over within 10 seconds, and 28.3% end without a single message from either person.
  • 8.2% of chats, about 1 in 12, become a real conversation, where both people send at least three messages. Chats between a man and a woman get there about four times as often as chats between two men (17.9% against 4.5%).
  • 83.2% of chats are between people in different countries. India (28.9%) and the United States (18.8%) together account for nearly half of all new accounts.
  • Random chat never really sleeps: the busiest hour (18:00–19:00 UTC) has only 1.57 times the chats of the quietest. Sunday is the busiest day of the week and Friday the quietest.
  • There's about one friend request for every 50 random chats, and 57.2% of requests are accepted. Automatic filters block 0.09% of messages, about 1 in 1,100.

How big is random chat in 2026?

Between May and 22 October 2026, Ome.gg hosted 11,855,663 random chats: one-to-one text matches between two strangers. In the same period 737,257 people made an account, friends exchanged 6,043,038 private messages, chatroom members posted 1,176,154 messages and friends started 74,573 voice or video calls.

Most of that happened late. Monthly random chats went from 335 in May to 118,771 in August, 1,622,001 in September and 10,105,836 in just the first 22 days of October. That October figure is more than six times September's total and works out at roughly 460,000 chats a day.

Sign-ups followed the same curve: 689 in May, 13,447 in August, 120,529 in September and 594,477 between 1 and 22 October. Because the service grew so fast, most of what follows describes random chat as it looked in September and October 2026.

How does a random chat actually go?

Most random chats are short. Across 10,097,628 chats between 30 September and 22 October 2026, 66.4% were ended by one of the two people within 10 seconds of starting. That's two in three.

Many never get going at all. In 28.3% of chats nobody wrote anything, and in 35.8% only one person did. The remaining 36% were two-sided, meaning both people sent at least one message.

Conversation: both sent 3+ messages (a real conversation). Silent, one-sided and two-sided add up to 100% with rounding; the other two overlap with them. Source: Ome.gg aggregate data.

Once both people have said something, the odds improve sharply. Of the two-sided chats, 22.8% turned into what we call a real conversation: both people sent at least three messages. Across all chats that's 8.2%, or about 1 in 12, which between 30 September and 22 October 2026 still added up to more than 800,000 real conversations.

Replies come within seconds

When someone does reply, they rarely keep the other person waiting: 81.8% of replies arrive within 5 seconds and 98.4% within 15 seconds. The average chat lasts 26.8 seconds; once both people have written something, the average roughly doubles to 52.3 seconds.

Two in three random chats are over within 10 seconds. But once both people have written something, more than 1 in 5 of those chats (22.8%) becomes a real conversation.

Who signs up for random chat?

Gender

Of the 737,257 people who made an Ome.gg account between May and 22 October 2026, 76.8% said they were men, 21.4% said they were women and 1.9% didn't specify. That's more than three men for every woman, a gap that shapes who meets whom, as the next section shows.

Countries

Between 16 and 23 October 2026, 248,146 new accounts were made. India led with 28.9% of them, followed by the United States with 18.8%: together, nearly half. The United Kingdom (5.4%), the Philippines (3.5%) and Canada (2.8%) completed the top five, and the top 20 countries made up about 81% of new accounts.

The gender balance differs a lot from country to country. In the Philippines, women made up 47.9% of new accounts, close to an even split and by far the highest share in the top 20. Indonesia (28.5%), the United Kingdom (24.7%), Australia (24.6%) and Bangladesh (24.6%) came next. At the other end, women were about one in eight new accounts in Italy (12.7%), Egypt (12.2%) and Brazil (12%).

Devices

Random chat is now mostly done on a phone. Among 30,010 devices first seen on Ome.gg in the 30 days to 23 October 2026, 46.5% ran Android and 33.5% ran iOS, so about four in five were phones, with Android ahead of iPhone. Windows accounted for 13.0%, Mac 4.2%, ChromeOS 1.8% and Linux 1.0%.

Ome.gg runs in any phone or computer browser, and if you chat often you can also install it as an app.

Interests

Most people skip interests entirely: only 9.9% of new accounts pick any. Among those who do, the most popular choices include Deep Talks (29.6%), Music (27.9%), LGBTQ+ (22.9%), Gaming (21.5%), Anime (17.4%) and Movies & TV (16.6%). Sports, Nightlife, Fitness, Travel and Food were each picked by between 10% and 12%.

Who meets whom?

Random chat is overwhelmingly international. In a sample of 65,294 chats, taken from three minutes of every hour on 18 and 22 October 2026, 83.2% were between people in different countries. Only 16.8% were within one country.

The most common pairing was India–India, at 12.9% of chats, so more than three in four same-country chats were between two people in India. Next came India–United States, at 9.1%.

Crossing a border doesn't seem to hold a conversation back. Cross-border chats became real conversations slightly more often than same-country ones: 8% against 6.6%.

Men, women and the four-times gap

With more than three in four new accounts belonging to men, most matches are between two men: 72.5% of chats in the sample. Chats between a man and a woman made up 22.3%, and chats between two women 1.6%.

The differences are large. A man–woman chat was about four times as likely to become a real conversation as a man–man chat (17.9% against 4.5%), and it lasted 50 seconds on average, against 20.

Woman–woman chats were the least likely to be two-sided (26.0%), yet 9.4% of them became real conversations, about twice the man–man rate, and they averaged 48 seconds. These are averages over a large sample; they describe patterns, not any one person.

When do people chat?

Random chat runs around the clock because the world takes turns. In the seven days to 23 October 2026, the busiest hour was 18:00–19:00 UTC, with 258,635 chats started across the week: about 37,000 on an average day. The quietest was 02:00–03:00 UTC, with 164,910, or about 23,600 a day.

18:00 UTC is 23:30 in India, the biggest country for new accounts, and early afternoon on the US east coast. That fits a wider pattern: in most big countries, the busiest three-hour window starts between 22:00 and 01:00 local time, and 20–40% of activity happens between midnight and 6 am.

Random chat never really sleeps. The busiest hour has only 1.57 times the chats of the quietest, so even at its lowest point Ome.gg runs at about 64% of its peak.

Across the week, Sunday is the busiest day, at about 116% of an average day, and Friday the quietest, at about 86%. A typical Sunday sees about 35% more chats than a typical Friday, and there's a midweek dip too, with Wednesday at about 93%.

What happens after a good chat?

A random chat doesn't have to be the end. In September and October 2026, people sent 228,584 friend requests from random chats: about 19.5 for every 1,000 chats in those two months, or roughly one for every 50. 57.2% of those requests were accepted.

Friends can then message each other privately, play games and call. Between May and 22 October 2026, friends sent 6,043,038 private messages, about half as many as there were random chats. If you want to turn a good chat into something more, here's how to make friends online.

Random matching on Ome.gg is text only. Random voice chat existed at launch but was removed on 24 August 2026 because almost nobody used it (see voice vs text chat). Voice and video are for friends, and of the calls friends tried in the 30 days to 23 October 2026, 67.9% were video.

How safe is random chat on Ome.gg?

Most messages are ordinary. In the seven days to 23 October 2026, people sent 14.8 million messages in random chats. Automatic filters blocked 0.09% of them before they reached anyone, about 1 in 1,100, and a further 0.10% were let through but flagged for review.

Reports are rare too. Since launch, people have filed 15,126 reports, equal to about 1.3 for every 1,000 random chats. Of the 14,430 reports in the 30 days to 23 October 2026, 67.5% came from random chats, 31.0% from private messages and 1.5% from profiles. Reports are reviewed by people and by automated review.

Ome.gg is for adults only (18+). It never asks for your real name, phone number or a photo to chat, you can skip any chat instantly, and you can block or report anyone. The safety page and the community guidelines cover the rest.

What this means if you use random chat

  • Say something early. Two in three chats are over within 10 seconds, and most replies come within 5, so a friendly first line in those first seconds gives the chat a chance. Ome.gg's opener cards suggest one, or you can send a one-tap wave. For more ideas, see how to talk to strangers online.
  • Don't take skips personally. Only about 1 in 12 chats becomes a real conversation, so quick skips, in both directions, are simply how the format works.
  • Expect someone from another country. More than four in five chats cross a border, and those chats do slightly better than same-country ones. Asking where someone is, and what time it is there, is an easy start.
  • Pick a few interests. Only 9.9% of new accounts choose any. Adding some gets you matched with people who share them, which gives you both something to talk about.
  • Know the busy times. Ome.gg is busiest around 18:00–19:00 UTC and on Sundays, so that's when the most people are online.
  • Keep the good ones. If a chat clicks, send a friend request: more than half are accepted. Prefer a group? Try the public chatrooms, each on its own topic.

How we measured this

Everything in this report comes from Ome.gg's own aggregate counts, read on 23 October 2026. Only totals and shares were used: no person, account or conversation was looked at individually. Different figures come from different periods and samples:

  • Totals and growth: daily totals from May to 22 October 2026, covering 11,855,663 random chats and 737,257 sign-ups.
  • How chats go: 10,097,628 random chats between 30 September and 22 October 2026. Friend requests: the 228,584 sent from random chats in September and October 2026.
  • Who signs up: gender from all 737,257 sign-ups, as each person chose it. Countries from 248,146 new accounts made between 16 and 23 October 2026, based on the country of the connection. Devices from 30,010 devices first seen in the 30 days to 23 October 2026.
  • Who meets whom: a sample of 65,294 chats, made up of three minutes of every hour on 18 and 22 October 2026.
  • When: chats started per hour (UTC) in the seven days to 23 October 2026. Weekdays from 8 September to 19 October 2026, each day measured against the seven days around it.
  • Safety: 14.8 million random-chat messages in the seven days to 23 October 2026, and 15,126 reports since launch, 14,430 of them in the 30 days to 23 October 2026.

A chat is one random match between two strangers. Two-sided means both people sent at least one message, and a real conversation means both sent at least three. Over within 10 seconds means one of the two ended the chat, by skipping or closing it, within 10 seconds of it starting.

Some limits to keep in mind. These are Ome.gg's numbers, not a measure of every random chat site. Gender is what people chose when they signed up, and country comes from the connection, so a VPN can place someone elsewhere. The country, device and pairing figures come from short windows in October 2026 and may shift with the seasons. Rates from the 18 and 22 October sample can differ slightly from the full count. And because Ome.gg grew so quickly, 98.9% of the chats counted here took place in September and October 2026.
