Chat Without Video: Never on Camera with a Stranger
Almost every well-known random chat site is built around a webcam. Ome.gg is built around not having one: random matching is voice and text, public chatrooms are text, and no stranger ever sees your face.
That isn't a feature we haven't got round to. It's the main design decision the site is built on.
What a camera actually costs you
Video chat with strangers has one well-documented failure mode, and everyone who has used a webcam roulette site knows exactly what it is. Removing the camera removes that entire category of behaviour rather than trying to moderate it after the fact.
It also removes screen recording. Anything you say here can be quoted, but there's no video of your face to be captured, clipped and posted somewhere you'll find it two years later.
It changes who shows up
A site with a camera selects for people who want to be looked at and people who want to look. A site without one selects for people who want to talk. That difference is visible within about five minutes of using either.
It also lowers the barrier enormously for anyone who doesn't want to perform — people who are self-conscious, people who aren't dressed, people in a shared room, people who just don't feel like being visible today.

Browse roomsVoice gets you most of what video gave you
Tone, humour, hesitation, warmth — nearly all the signal that makes a conversation feel human is carried in the voice rather than the picture. Video mostly adds appearance, which is the part that causes the problems.
Voice chat here is audio only and opt-in; text chat needs nothing at all. Switching between them is one tap in either direction.
One thing worth stating plainly rather than burying: video calling does exist on Ome.gg, but only between two people who have already sent and accepted a friend request, and only if one of them starts a call. It is not part of random matching and it is not in public rooms. You cannot be put on camera by a stranger, because a stranger cannot call you.

No video — frequently asked questions
Is there really no video with strangers?+
None. Random matching is voice or text, and public chatrooms are text. There is no video mode in either, so a stranger can never see you. Video calling exists only between two people who have accepted each other as friends.
Can someone still record me?+
They could record audio, as with any voice call. But there's no video of you to capture, which is the thing that causes most of the harm on camera-based sites.
Do I have to use voice?+
No. Text chat needs no microphone at all. Voice is a separate mode you opt into, and your browser asks permission first.
Isn't video better for meeting people?+
Voice carries nearly all of the tone and personality that video does. What video adds is appearance — which is precisely the part that makes stranger chat go wrong.
Is it free?+
Yes — voice, text, public chatrooms, friends and DMs, all free without an account.
