Frequently asked
Is Ome.gg really free?+
Yes. Free random text chat, no sign-up required, no ads in the chat surface. The core experience will always be free.
Do I need to create an account?+
No. The first time you start a chat you're given a random anonymous handle and avatar. You can optionally link an email later to keep your profile, friends list, and DMs across devices — but it's never required for random chatting.
How do you keep me safe?+
Every text message runs through a real-time moderator before it reaches the other person — explicit, harassing, or harmful content is blocked. You can report anyone in one tap, and three distinct reports in 24 hours automatically suspends the offender. See our Safety page for the full picture.
What's the minimum age?+
18+. We refuse minors and aggressively enforce the policy. Reporting someone you believe to be under 18 with reason "minor" immediately suspends them and puts the account at the top of our review queue for a human decision.
How does anonymity work?+
Your handle and avatar are randomly generated and not tied to your real identity. We don't store your raw IP address — only the /24 subnet, used for ban-evasion only, never sold or shared. See our Privacy Policy.
Can I link multiple devices?+
Yes — link an email in Settings and sign in from any other device using the magic link we send. Your friends, DMs, and preferences travel with you.
How do I block or report someone?+
Mid-chat: tap the flag icon to report, or the X-circle to block. In a public chatroom, tap any message to report it and the person who sent it. On someone's profile page, use the menu to report or block them. Blocking stops matching with that person forever; reporting also sends the context to our moderation queue.
I was banned — what now?+
If you think the ban was a mistake, email [email protected] or use the contact form below. Permanent bans are reviewed individually. Trying to evade a ban by creating a new account doesn't work and may escalate the situation.
How do I delete my account?+
Settings → Profile → Danger Zone → Delete account. This permanently removes your handle, linked email, friends, and messages. It can't be undone.
A call with a friend isn't connecting+
Voice and video calls between friends use direct peer-to-peer media (WebRTC), which works on most home and mobile networks but can be blocked by strict corporate or VPN firewalls. If the call never reaches "connected", try a different network — messaging keeps working either way.
How do you handle reports?+
Reports go to a moderation queue reviewed by a human. The reported user's recent chat or DM history (with the reporter) is automatically attached so context is preserved; profile reports get their own queue showing the profile itself. Repeated reports from different people suspend an account automatically while it waits for review, and severe cases — CSAM, minor reports — get the longest automatic suspension and are prioritised. Permanent removal is a human decision, not an automatic one.
What are public chatrooms?+
Open group rooms organised by topic — gaming, music, and so on. You can read a room's recent history before joining, and once you join it stays in your sidebar with an unread count until you leave. Everything you post there is visible to everyone in the room, so treat it as public. Rooms are created and moderated by us; users can't make their own.
What is my profile page?+
If you link an email, your account gets a public page at ome.gg/@yourhandle showing your avatar, handle, and anything you choose to add — a display name, a short bio, a location, plus your interests and join date. Anyone can open it, including people without an account, and search engines may index it. Edit it under Settings → Profile.
How do I make my profile private?+
Settings → Privacy → turn off "Public profile page". Your page then returns nothing for everyone except you, and your name stops being a link anywhere in the app. Nothing is deleted — turn it back on and it returns exactly as it was. You can also just clear individual fields instead.
What happens to my profile link if I change my username?+
Your old link keeps working: ome.gg/@oldname redirects to your new one. The handle you released also stays reserved to you, so nobody else can take it and inherit your links — and you can switch back to it later if you want.
