Ome.ggDutch Chat: Talk to Dutch Speakers Online
Dutch learners have one specific problem: almost every Dutch speaker also speaks excellent English and will switch the moment you hesitate. Finding people willing to stay in Dutch is genuinely the hard part.
Ome.gg is free anonymous text chat with strangers, with a complete Dutch interface. No account, no camera.
Getting people to stay in Dutch
Say it up front. "Ik oefen Nederlands" in the first message is usually enough — most Dutch speakers switch to English out of politeness rather than impatience, and they'll happily stop once they know it's not helping.
Typing helps here too. Out loud, the temptation to switch kicks in the second you stumble; in a typed conversation your hesitation is invisible and the exchange just carries on.
Netherlands and Flanders sound different
Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands and in Flanders, the northern half of Belgium, and the two varieties differ in accent, intonation and a good amount of vocabulary. Flemish is generally described as softer; Dutch speakers from the Netherlands are usually blunter in register.
Both are on a global queue and neither is more correct. If your course taught you one, the other is worth deliberate exposure.

Browse roomsWhy a small language suits random chat
Dutch has around 25 million speakers, so opportunities to practise it with strangers are genuinely scarce compared to Spanish or French. A global random-chat queue is one of the few places you can just keep rolling until you find one.
Set the Languages interest tag before you queue to weight the matcher toward people who are also here to exchange, and consider public chatrooms — you can read the room before saying anything, which is a gentler start.
When you do find a Dutch speaker willing to stay in Dutch, send a friend request rather than letting the match end. Given how rare that combination is, one person you can DM whenever you like is worth more than another hour in the queue.

Dutch — frequently asked questions
Why does everyone switch to English?+
Politeness, mostly — Dutch speakers have very high English proficiency and switch automatically. Saying you're practising Dutch in your first message usually stops it.
Is Dutch chat free?+
Yes — random text chat, chatrooms, friends and DMs, all free and all without an account.
Dutch or Flemish?+
Both. They differ in accent and vocabulary but are mutually intelligible, and the queue is global so you'll meet speakers of each.
Can I use the site in Dutch?+
Completely — interface, settings, chatrooms and notifications are all translated.
Is there video chat?+
Not with strangers. Random chat and public chatrooms are text only. The one place voice or video exists on Ome.gg is a call between two people who have already accepted each other as friends, and both sides have to start it.
