A Random Chat App With Nothing to Install

Every chat app wants a download, an account, notification permissions and a slice of your storage. Ome.gg wants a browser tab.

It behaves like an app — installable to your home screen, push notifications if you want them, works offline-ish — without ever going through an app store.

Browser first, app-like when you want it

The whole thing runs in a normal browser on phone or desktop. Nothing to install, no app store account, no 80MB download over mobile data, and no update to approve every fortnight.

If you want the app feel, add it to your home screen. It opens full-screen with its own icon, and can send push notifications for direct messages, friend requests and incoming calls — but only if you turn those on. Public rooms use in-app unread badges rather than push.

What it actually does

Random one-to-one text chat and random one-to-one voice chat, matched from a global queue with interest weighting. Public group chatrooms you can join and leave. A friends list with private direct messages. Built-in games in one-to-one text chats.

No video, in any mode. That's the one thing it deliberately doesn't do.

Random voice chat

One-to-one audio with a stranger. No camera, no account, matched in seconds.

Why no app store

Practically: it means no install friction, no platform review queue between a fix and you having it, and no 30% cut funding a store listing. A deploy is live for everyone at once.

For you it mostly means the thing you clicked is the thing you're using ten seconds later, and uninstalling is closing a tab.

Chat app — frequently asked questions

Is there an iOS or Android app?+

Not in the app stores, and there doesn't need to be. Ome.gg runs in mobile Safari and Chrome, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an installed app.

Do I get notifications?+

If you enable them. Push notifications for direct messages, friend activity and incoming calls are opt-in, and your browser will ask before anything is sent. Room activity shows as an unread badge in the sidebar rather than as a push.

Does it work offline?+

The app shell is cached so it loads instantly, but chat needs a connection — real-time conversation with strangers being what it is.

Is it free?+

Yes. Random voice and text chat, rooms, friends and DMs are all free without an account. Premium adds optional extras like the gender filter and more themes.

How much storage does it use?+

A few megabytes of cache, versus tens or hundreds for a native app. Clearing your browser data removes it entirely.
